The former Chairman, Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, has been sentenced to 8-years imprisonment. ayokinews.com reports
The judgement was delivered on Monday, by Justice Okon Abang, of the Federal High Court in Abuja (FCT).
Maina was convicted of embezzling N2 billion naira meant for pensioners, while the Judge expressed regrets that many pensioners died out of suffering.
Maina was convicted by the court on count 2, 6, 9, 3, 7 and 10 charges filed against him.
The former pension boss was found guilty of concealing his real identity as a signatory to bank accounts opened in UBA and Fidelity Bank, while he used the identity of his family members without their knowledge.
His bank accounts were found to have cash deposits of N300 million, N500 million, and N1.5 billion naira.
In the course of judgement, Maina was unable to prove the legitimate of the money found in the bank accounts.
Justice Abang ruled that Maina’s salary and emoluments as a Nigeria civil servant would not amount to the monies in these accounts.’
The court found Maina guilty of purchasing landed properties in Abuja, with a cash sum of $1.4 million, which is above the statutory threshold of N5 million naira without passing through a financial institution.
