“In obedience to the will of the people, who after all placed me in the presidency many years ago, I now say to my countrymen, I will follow your wish,” Duterte said as he rallied public support for the candidacy of his longtime aide, Senator Christopher Bong.
Political analysts have said that it is crucial for President Duterte, to have a loyal successor to protect him from potential legal actions, in Philippine or by the International Criminal Court (ICC), over the thousands of state sponsored killings in his war on drugs since 2016.
