Announcing his political retirement, President Duterte said, “Today, I announce my retirement from politics.” Many are currently of the opinion that the 76-years-old ruler stepped down to clear the way for his daughter to becoming the next Philippine President.
President Duterte had been expected to run for Vice President, a plan which many Filipinos opposed as being undemocratic as it negates the provisions of the constitution.

Speaking on the presidential candidacy of his longtime aide, Senator Christopher “Bong, Duterte urged members of the public to support his candidacy.
“In obedience to the will of the people, who after all placed me in the presidency many years ago, I now say to my countrymen, I will follow your wish,” Duterte said as he rallied public support for the candidacy of his longtime aide, Senator Christopher Bong.
Political analysts have said that it is crucial for President Duterte, to have a loyal successor to protect him from potential legal actions, in Philippine or by the International Criminal Court (ICC), over the thousands of state sponsored killings in his war on drugs since 2016.
