Senegal has won the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a penalty shootout victory over Egypt on Sunday. This is the first time Senegal winning the AFCON. ayokinews.com reports
Senegal defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties, with Sadio Mane having an edge on his Liverpool teammate Mohammed Salah, in the final.
In the third minute, Mane was awarded a penalty, but the Egyptian goalkeeper stopped it.
The match proceeded into extra time because there were no goals in the normal 90 minutes. After no side scored in the thirty minutes of extra time, the AFCON final was decided on penalties which ended in a 4-2 win for Senegal.
Senegal and Egypt will be squaring off in the African World Cup Qualifiers on March 23 and March 29.
