Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, made a surprising video call to the Nigerian squad on Sunday afternoon, urging them to keep the winning spirit going ahead of their knockout match against Tunisia. ayokinews.com reports
The video conference took place hours before Tunisia’s Round of 16 match. There is no tolerance for mistakes in this match, as a winner must emerge.
The president, who was flanked by the Sports Minister, spoke to the team from the seat of power, the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, and praised the players and their coaches for making the country proud.
In his words: “I want to thank you for what you have done for the nation so far. You have to keep winning. Nigerians are proud of you.”
“You have demonstrated patriotic zeal and a high level of discipline, determination and commitment in all the games you have played so far and that is why we all are happy with you.”
“The Government will continue to support you within available resources at our disposal.”
Austin Eguavoen, the coach, and Ahmed Musa, the captain, both stated in their comments that the squad would not rest on their laurels and will approach their Round of 16 game tonight with the same mindset as they did during the group stage.
