Nigerian Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has stated that the issue of requesting a pardon for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is premature move. ayokinews.com reports
Malami made this known while appearing on Wednesday, as a guest speaker on ‘Politics Today’, a Channels Television programme.
According to the AGF, “Pardon is a function of conviction in the Nigerian context and as far as I know, Nnamdi Kanu has not been convicted yet so the idea of pardoning him is premature.”
Malami noted that Kanu has not been fully exonerated from the charges leveled against him in court and as such, the issue of granting him a pardon cannot yet be placed on the table.
The AGF, however, stated that he isn’t ruling out the option, but noted that the issue of pardoning Kanu for his misdeeds isn’t on the table yet.
