Nancy Pelosi, the 81-year-old Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has declared a re-election bid ahead of the November 2022 election. ayokinews.com reports
Her declaration announcement on Tuesday night, put an end to months of speculations as to when she was retiring from politics.
“Much more has to be done to enhance people’s lives,” the California Democrat said in a video uploaded on Facebook.
“Our democracy is at risk because of the assaults on the truth, the assault on the US Capitol and the state-by-state assault on voting rights,” she said.
“This election is crucial. Nothing less is at stake than our democracy. But as we say, we don’t agonise, we organise and that is why I am running for re-election to Congress and respectfully seek your support. I’d be greatly honoured by it and grateful for it. Thank you so much.”
Nancy Pelosi was first elected to United States Congress in 1987 and has served as the leading Democrat in the House of Representatives since 2003.
She was also the first woman to handle the US Speaker’s gavel in 2007.
Pelosi served as the minority leader for eight-years after Democrats were defeated in the 2010 midterm elections, before returning to the Speakership in 2019.
