Contrary to report that Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo alias Sunday Igboho, will be released shortly after an Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said that he would, the government of the Republic of Benin has now extended his detention for another six months. ayokinews.com reports
The renewal occurred less than two days after Olajengbesi announced the lawsuit, although he has since resigned from the Nigerian legal team representing Igboho.
In a post shared on Olajengbesi’s Facebook handle, he said: “Chief Sunday Igboho will be out very soon and there will be massive jubilation across the entire Yoruba land. He is no doubt a courageous man. This is very authoritative just that our Yoruba leaders should stop being selfish and allow good to prevail.”
However, on Sunday night, Igboho’s lawyer, Chief Yomi Alliyu (SAN), revealed that the Benin Republic government has further renewed the detention of the Yoruba activist without a court hearing.
Despite the fact that there are no criminal charges or extradition requests pending against Igboho, the Beninese government has taken efforts to keep him detained, according to Alliyu.

“Contrary to what was speculated in the news by a lawyer, the government of Benin Republic has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo for another six months even though there is no charge in there file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria,” Alliyu said.
The International Criminal Police Organization apprehended Sunday Igboho, on his way to Germany on Monday, July 19, 2021, at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
He had supposedly fled Nigeria following a deadly raid by the Department of State Service (DSS) on his Soka property in Ibadan, Oyo State, on suspicion of possessing illegal weaponry.
Igboho’s extradition to Nigeria was halted by a Benin court, which also ordered that the activist be detained in custody until a hearing.
