Africa’s leading software developer and founder of AppsTech, Rebecca Enochong, has been arrested in Douala, Cameroon, for alleged contempt of court. ayokinews.com reports
According to popular Human Rights Activist and President of Cameroon’s Peoples Party (CPP), Kah Walla, the software developer was arrested without a police warrant and concrete evidence.
Walla, however noted that there was only a verbal request (plainte verbal du Procureur General) by the Attorney General.
Information gotten from Technext revealed that Rebecca was being investigated in a family case along with her brother when she made a chilling discovery that her case was being handled by several state investigators, a move which made her request from the General Prosecutor that her case be handled by a single investigator.
The Attorney General took Rebecca’s request as an offense against the law and further ordered her arrest and detention on Tuesday 12th August, 2021, for contempt of court.
Reacting to her arrest by the Cameroonian authorities was a company chaired by Rebecca, AfriLabs, Africa’s largest network of innovation hubs along with other key African technological investors who have petitioned for her immediate release.
AfriLabs noted that Rebecca’s arrest was a “a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” as there wasn’t any warrant to the effect of her arrest.
“We are disappointed with the Cameroonian government on this development and we strongly ask they #FreeRebecca.”
“It’s the birth of another unfortunate hashtag in the central African country that has been the source of many recent concerns for human rights observers,” AfriLabs stated.
Rebecca’s unlawful arrest has now led to a wide outrage as many believe she wasn’t in any contempt with the court and that her fundamental rights is being trampled upon.
Rebecca Enochong is the founder of AppsTech, a technological hub which operates in Cameroon and the United States. Rebecca who is very famous in the African technology world is also the co-founder of African Business Angels Network, a company which encourages early-stage investment in African startups.
