A total number of 699 people have been detained for different crimes in the Niger Delta region in 2022, according to Operation Delta Safe, a Joint Security Task Force in the South-South.
The Joint Task Force’s commander, Rear Adm. Aminu Hassan, stated this on Friday, at Igbogene in Yenagoa while addressing journalists on the task force’s operations in 2022.
According to NAM, the commander said that 1,883 illicit oil refinery facilities were destroyed, 90 illegal firearms and large calibre ammunition were recovered, and 699 suspects were arrested.
Hassan noted that during the time under review, 12 states in the region saw the destruction of more than 1,800 illicit oil refinery installations as well as 37 militants and sea pirate camps.
The operation, according to the commander, was able to conserve about N53 billion in crude oil, fuel, kerosene, and gasoline.
Seven people were detained for having illegal weapons, he added.
He further stated that the achievements were accomplished after multiple operations were carried out to protect the Niger Delta’s oil & gas activities and installations as well as the local populace.
He continued by saying that the operation had been expanded to include tactics for non-kinetic conflict resolution, the removal of terrorists and sea pirates, and the prevention of crude oil theft.
