Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress, APC, has criticized the support of Peter Obi from the Labour Party, LP, by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, terming it as being worthless.
According to Tinubu, Obasanjo lacked the political influence or goodwill necessary in Nigeria to ensure Obi’s victory in the 2023 general election.
Speaking via Bayo Onanuga, his director of media and publicity, Tinubu said that the ex-Nigerian president was a political paperweight.
However, Tinubu emphasized that the former president is free to support any presidential contender of his choosing.
Tinubu further pledged not to let Obasanjo’s support of Obi cause him to lose any sleep, highlighting the fact that the former president was not a democrat that anybody should identify with.
The statement partly reads:
“We make bold to say that our party and candidate, Tinubu will not lose sleep over Obasanjo’s move, as Obasanjo is notorious for always opposing progressive political forces, as he did against MKO Abiola in 1993.
“The endorsement is worthless because the former President does not possess any political goodwill or leverage anywhere in Nigeria to make anyone win a Councillorship election, let alone win a Presidential election. He is a political paperweight.
“He is also not a democrat anyone should be proud to be associated with.”
In a letter addressing national issues over the weekend, the former president backed the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, as his preferred candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
