Speaking during video conference with the UK-led joint expeditionary force on Tuesday, Zelenskyy stated that it is a fact that the Ukrainian people must accept.
“Ukraine is not a member of NATO. We understand that. We have heard for years that the doors were open, but we also heard that we could not join. It’s a truth and it must be recognised,” Zelensky said.
“I am glad that our people are beginning to understand this and rely on themselves and the partners who are helping us.”
One of Russia’s requests to end the war in Ukraine is that the country cease its ambition to join NATO.
Since the Russian army’s invasion, NATO members have contributed military weapons, financial and humanitarian aid to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia.

However, the alliance ruled against deploying soldiers to Ukraine, claiming that doing so would “spark direct confrontation with Russia.”
According to US President Joe Biden’s earlier warning, a “NATO-Russia confrontation might lead to World War III”.
Despite Zelenskyy’s request to close its airspace to Russia in order to protect Ukrainian people, NATO refused.
Taking such action, according to NATO, might lead to a “full-fledged war in Europe involving many more nations.”
