Swedish and Finnish diplomats have formally submitted their membership applications to the Secretary-General, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg. ayokinews.com reports
Stoltenberg, highlighted the decision as a “historic step” in a “critical moment” for European security against the backdrop of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, as documented in an online video event on Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
He stated that the alliance will evaluate the membership proposal as soon as possible, but that all member’s security interests “must be considered.”

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his displeasure with NATO.
Erdogan stated that his country will not accept the membership of two nations that have sanctioned his country into NATO.
According to him, both countries (Finland & Sweden) support “terrorist organizations,” referring to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Kurdish militia People’s Defense Units (YPG) in Syria.
