Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, has outlawed the transportation of cattle on foot throughout the whole state.
The restriction is in conformity with the 2021 anti-open grazing ordinance of the State, according to Soludo, who met with members of the Anambra State Cattle Menace Committee at the Government House, Awka, over the weekend. He also said that enforcement will start in September.
“Now that we have a law banning open grazing, the law enforcement agents have been directed to implement it.
“Though the law has been in existence since almost one year ago, cattle rearers keep parading certain areas in the State in contravention to the law,” Soludo said.

Willie Obiano, a former governor of the state, had in 2021 signed the Anambra State Cattle and Other Livestock Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill, but did not put the prohibition into effect.
Speaking at the meeting, Soludo promised that his administration will see to it that the law was put into effect by September.
He praised the Anambra State Cattle Menace Committee’s members for their dedication to their jobs and said that although the herdsmen and the Anambra people have generally coexisted peacefully, the herdsmen must operate within the confines of the law.
