Putin had dispatched soldiers to separatist-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine for what he termed a “peacekeeping” mission.
The orders came hours after Putin signed decrees recognizing the autonomy (independence) of Moscow-backed separatist regions of Ukraine.
Putin’s decrees formally recognized the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas area.
The decrees declared them Independent states and pledged Russian forces to protect them. Russian peacekeeping personnel would be stationed in the locations, according to the directives.
