A woman identified as a top figure in the Nigerian mafia has finally been arrested after being on the run since 2010.
The woman was arrested in Abuja and has since been flown to Rome, Italy, where she has been handed a sentence of 13-years imprisonment.
Her crimes, according to the Italian police, included the running of a prostitution ring.
The criminal, identified as Jeff Joy, 48, was arrested in Nigeria on June 4, 2022.
The international warrant for her extradition was aided by a treaty signed by Nigeria and Italy in 2020.
According to investigators in the city of Ancona, Jeff was a major player in the trafficking of women to Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.
The victims were said to have narrated their cruel ordeal of being forced into prostitution.
A video released by the Italian police showed the woman being flown from the Abuja airport, Nigeria, to Ciampino airport in Rome.
“Africa today is a strategic location when looking for fugitives and fighting organised crime,” said Vittorio Rizzi, an officer responsible for international coordination.
