The Police Commission Union has vowed to go on an indefinite strike, following allegations that its officials colluded with the Police Force to stop its duty to hire new officers.
Adoyi Adoyi, the Chairman of the Joint Union Congress’ Police Service Commission Chapter, made this announcement on Thursday and noted that the strike will start on August 29.
The dispute between the Police Force and the PSC about who is legally responsible for managing the hiring of new officers for the force is the background to the recent development.
Adoyi said, “We’re embarking on an indefinite strike from Monday, August 29, to show how discontent with the way the chairman of the commission is running the PSC, and the flagrant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the PSC by the IGO, Usman Baba.
“The duties of the PSC are spelt out in the constitution, but the IGP has disregarded all of that, and has taken over the duties of the commission. He appoints and promotes at will as opposed to what is stated in the constitution.

“According to the constitution, the appointment, promotion, and recruitment of police officers and constables are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP.”
Since 2020, there has been conflict between the PSC and the Nigerian Police on the hiring of police constables.
The latter has forced the former to stop performing the recruiting process on its own, while the former had maintained that recruitment was a constitutionally guaranteed right.
After the police officially disapproved of the recruiting exercise issued by the commission, the PSC on Tuesday pulled on, supporting the 2022 Police recruitment exercise.
