The claim made by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu needed 25% per cent votes from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to win the February 25 election was on Wednesday striked out by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).
Delivering the judgement, Justice Haruna Tsammani stated that FCT residents have no special privileges, hence such claim of compulsorily having 25% in the FCT cannot stand.
The decision was made in reaction to the petition filed, faulting the declaration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as winner of the last presidential election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Prior before now, there had been arguments as regards the declaration of President Bola Tinubu in the last election over his failure to score 25% of votes in the FCT.
This argument led to a widespread debate among Nigerians as to whether it was compulsory to garner 25% of votes in the FCT to be declared winner in a presidential election.
With the judgement of the court, the issue have now been put to rest.
