Nigerian lawyer and Human Rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), has expressed his disappointment in the just concluded February 25th presidential election.
The activist, in a statement made to DAILY POST said, “The presidential election of February 25, 2023 cannot be portrayed as a worthy legacy for our dear country.”
Adegboruwa berated the Independent National Electoral Election (INEC) over what he described as administrative and logistical inadequacies, saying the electoral umpire failed to conduct a free, fair and credible election despite adequate early funding.
The legal luminary lamented public harassment and intimidation of voters, while highlighting the manipulation and rigging of election results by politicians and INEC officials.
He made it clear that the Nigerian constitution bestowed sovereignty on Nigerians, thus the legitimacy of any government belongs to the people through their votes.
“To this end, no legitimacy can spring forth from any process that is devoid of transparency and accountability.
“Threat to voters, physical injury and even death in some cases, all indicate some form of deliberate design to compromise the electoral process of the last presidential election.”
Adegboruwa further added that INEC has a huge responsibility of integrity and accountability to Nigerians by adhering to the laws and guidelines regulating the electoral process.
