The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms Incorporated, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and its solicitor, AT3 Resources Limited.
According to a statement on Tuesday by ARCON, the top regulatory body for Nigeria’s advertising ecosystem, the case is being heard at the Federal High Court’s Abuja Judicial Division. ARCON is requesting a declaration, among other things, that Meta Platforms Incorporated’s continued publication and exposure of various advertisements targeted at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms without making sure they are vetted and approved before exposure is illegal.
ARCON revealed that the Federal Government had lost money, as a result of Meta Platforms Incorporated’s ongoing display of unscreened advertisements.
As a result of Meta Incorporated’s ongoing exposure of prohibited advertisements on its platforms, ARCON is requesting a N30 billion fine as well as compensation for lost income.
