The British Conservative Party on Monday chose Liz Truss as its next leader. As the nation experiences its worst economic crisis in decades, Truss will succeed outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Following a grueling summer-long election, which was determined by just over 170,000 Conservative members — a tiny fraction of the voters in Britain, the foreign secretary easily defeated her opponent, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, by around 57 to 43 percent.
Truss called it an “honor to be chosen” after “one of the longest job interviews in history,” while giving a brief speech at a conference center in central London.
“I campaigned as a Conservative, and I will govern as a Conservative,” she said, while touting Tory values of low taxes and personal responsibility.
Truss promised to address tax cuts and the energy problem with a “bold plan.”
Truss, 47, will become just the third female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK) after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
She will formally take office today, Tuesday, September 6th, 2022, as outgoing PM Boris Johnson submits his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II.
