The police in Lagos have narrated the fatal altercation with Yoruba Nation agitators on Monday in Ojota.
The agitators were said to have engaged security personnel in a heated confrontation, leading to palpable tension in and around the area.
In a picture shared on Twitter, a young man could be seen lying dead, while others were reportedly injured.
Reacting to the incident was SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police public relations officer (PPRO), who released a statement on the brutal brawl.
“Miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation Agitators” came out in their hundreds, disrupting social and commercial activities at Ojota”, the PRO noted.
He said that as a result, police from the Alausa Division and the Raid Respond Squad (RRS) intervened to disperse the unwelcome crowd and avoid a collapse in law and order.
“The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroying two vehicles in the process.
“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.”
The Lagos State Police Command, according to Hundeyin, will not let any individual or group of individuals to disturb the peace in Lagos.
It is unclear if the victim was shot intentionally or accidentally.
“They shot teargas and guns at us. They have killed one person, this is Ojota”, a protester screamed in a video.
A Toyota Hilux that was allegedly driven by the police officers was set on fire. On the highway, there were also bonfires.
