The Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed Nigerian Muslims to start the look out for the new moon of Muharram 1443AH, a signal of the beginning of a new year on the islamic calendar. ayokinews.com reports
The Sultan made this known in statement signed by Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Professor Sambo Junaidu, on Saturday 7th August, 2021.
The Sultan directed that the Muslims start the look out for the new moon from Sunday 8 to August 9, as the new moon would usher in the new Islamic year 1443 AH.
“This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Sunday, August 8, which is equivalent to 29th day of Dhul-Hijja 1442AH shall be the day to look out for the new moon of Muharram 1443AH.

“Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking out for the new moon on Sunday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultan,’’ he said.
The Sultan further prayed to Allah to grant Muslims the strength to continue the discharge of their good deeds in the ways of Islam.
