The People’s Democratic Party’s Governors Forum have petitioned the National Assembly to overrule President Muhammadu Buhari and adopt the electoral act amendment bill or remove the sections on direct primaries. ayokinews.com reports
The governors’ viewpoint was outlined in a statement issued on Monday, following a meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has earlier refused to sign the bill into law on the grounds that he was concerned about the suggestion of direct primaries for political parties.
The governors of the opposition party (PDP) further urged the legislature to start working on the bill right away since it is vital for the country’s electoral system.
“The PDP Governors requested the National Assembly to quickly conclude deliberations on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill either by overriding Mr President’s veto or deleting areas of complaints,” the communique reads.
“The meeting advised that the option of sustaining Mr President’s veto would lead to a quicker resolution and would deny Mr President the opportunity to once again truncate a reformed Electoral jurisprudence for Nigeria. An early concluded Electoral Act is vital for credible elections.”
