Saraki Backs Direct Primary, Asks Pres. Buhari To Sign New Electoral Law

Former Nigeria 8th Assembly Senate President, Olubukola Saraki, has thrown his support for the introduction of direct primary election for political parties in Nigeria. ayokinews.com reports

Saraki urged politicians not to allow the debate on the approval of direct primary by the National Assembly, ruin the process of having a new electoral law for the country.

The former federal lawmaker, made this known while speaking with newsmen at the at the 9th memorial prayer organised in honour of his late father, Dr. Olusola Saraki, on Friday in Ilorin, Kwara state.

Saraki said that the most important of all, is for President Muhammadu Buhari, to sign the new electoral bill into law for the benefit of Nigerians.

In his words: “Direct primary is best for political parties if properly done. But I am sure Nigerians are not prepared for it because there is still a lot of work to be done.

“But now that the National Assembly has passed it, we should make the best out of the situation rather than allowing the controversy, which is one item, to throw away the other good parts of the bill.

“What is important, is for the President to sign it and enable Nigerians to benefit from the other parts.”
