The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has seized 7,000 donkey penises at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, after the shipment’s odour raised suspicion.
According to reports, the donkey penises were being sent to Hong Kong in 16 bags.
Sambo Dangaladima, the customs controller, told the BBC that the donkey penises were found in sacks at the airport’s animal export section.
The 7,000 donkey penises, according to him, were discovered inside after suspicious customs agents opened the bags after smelling a strong odor coming from them.
Dangaladima said that a suspect associated with the shipment, which is thought to be worth N200 million (£416,000), was able to escape.
Illegal trade in donkey parts, such as the animal’s skin and penises, is common, especially from Nigeria to China.
Animal parts are used in China to make the traditional medicine known as “ejiao.”
