The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has said that it awaits the Supreme court verdict before taking any further action on the controversial Value Added Tax (VAT). ayokinews.com reports
The Governor of Ekiti state who also doubles as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi, made this known while featuring on programme on Arise TV on Monday.
Speaking during the programme, Governor Fayemi noted that the rising controversy on the issue of Value Added Tax (VAT) collection by states requires both legal and political intervention to be settled without discord.
VAT: FIRS Move To Amend Constitution Dead On Arrival, Says Akeredolu
Fayemi said, “But, our take on this is that the Supreme Court should accelerate its decision so that we have clarity over who should be in charge of Value Added Tax (VAT), whether it is the Federal Inland Revenue Service, or the states.
“States that have gone to court believe clearly that this responsibility evolves, according to their own understanding, on what the Constitution says.
“The important thing is that our tax system is problematic, confusing, and contradictory. We need to do a lot more to clarify things so that it can give room for more efficient and effective collection of taxes.”
