Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi’s hostage negotiator in Nigeria, Tukur Mamu was reportedly detained in Egypt.
Mamu revealed to the media that he was detained by Interpol on Tuesday at the Cairo International Airport as he was awaiting a connecting flight to Saudi Arabia.
Mamu, the proprietor of the Desert Herald Newspaper in Kaduna, said that Interpol had questioned him before flying him back to Nigeria and that they had found no evidence against him. His two wives and one other individual were with him.
Gumi’s spokesperson is scheduled to arrive at Aminu Kano International Airport, and Department of State Services (DSS) representatives may interrogate him more later on Wednesday.
Some of the attackers on the Kaduna-Abuja train in March 2022 were freed as a result of negotiations led by Mamu. A claim that the Nigerian government was endangering his life caused him to step down as the chief negotiator.
Mamu was the negotiator who negotiated the release of some of the victims of the Kaduna-Abuja train attack. He retreated as lead negotiator following an alleged threat to his life by the Nigerian government.
