The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, okayed the request of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), used during the February 25th Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The proceeding was led by Justice Joseph Ikyegh, who maintained that the stopping of INEC from reconfiguring the BVAS machines used, would affect the conduct of the forthcoming March 11th Governorship elections.
The court agreed with INEC that information on accreditation contained in the BVAS machines had been uploaded to the server and could be accessed at any time.
The court in its ruling explained that the granting of Labour Party’s request would tie down the operational hands of INEC in conducting the forthcoming March 11th governorship elections.
Commenting on the court’s ruling was Mr. Sam Hart, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to the Abia state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who said:
“Today’s Judgments summarized.
“Win-Win for both INEC & LP. Both requests granted.
“INEC assures Court that BVAS reconfiguration will not wipe data as they are saved in server back end.
“Judgment: LP – Inspect records
“INEC – Reconfigure BVAS for March 11,” Hart tweeted.
