The leader of the Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has countered the statement made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying that the oil in the Niger Delta doesn’t belong to Nigeria. ayokinews.com reports
Adebanjo backed the response of the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, who engaged Obasanjo in a verbal war over the latter’s statement claiming that the oil resources found in the Niger Delta region belong to Nigeria.
Chief Adebanjo made this known on Wednesday, while addressing a press conference in Lagos, where he described Obasanjo’s comment on the Niger Delta as being provocative.
The Afenifere stalwart recalled that there had been peaceful coexistence in the country until when the military hijacked power in 1966 and “abrogated the constitution agreed to by our founding fathers and set up the present 1999 Constitution.”
He further urged Obasanjo to join hands with the progressives to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari carries out the restructuring of the country’s system for the betterment of all.
