EFCC Seals Ex-Governor Obiano’s Mansions In Anambra

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has reportedly sealed off some properties belonging to the former Governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano, following corruption charges leveled against him. ayokinews.com reports

The properties which includes mansions allegedly owned by the ex-Governor was sealed at the Ngozika Estate in Awka.

An inscription by the anti-graft commission, which was placed on the building linked to Obiano reads: “EFCC, Keep Off; Under Investigation”.

This is coming after Obiano was arrested by the EFCC at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, while on his way to the United States of America (USA), shortly after handing over to his sucessor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo on Thursday, March 17, 2022.

Obiano was then granted an administrative bail, but it took two days for the bail condition to be met, which included, the two sureties who are Directors of the Federal Civil Service, and must have landed property in Maitama or Wuse areas of Abuja and also the provision of a seating Senator.

EFCC Frees Obiano, Seizes Passport

Report has it that Senator Stella Oduah, the lawmaker representing Anambra North Senatorial District, was approached as a surety for the embattled former Governor.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, stated that Obiano was arrested following alleged “misappropriation of public funds”, including a cash withdrawal of N5 billion Sure-P fund and N37 billion security vote. He claimed part of the embezzled funds was diverted into political activities in the state, an act which negates the law.

The EFCC added Obiano to its watchlist months before his term-of-office ended, as the commission indicated that he had questions to answer over suspected misconduct while in office.

Soludo complicated issues for his predecessor by revealing in an interview with Arise Television that Obiano left the state with a debt of N109 billion and between N300 million to N400 million in treasury fund.
