The Premier League board has barred Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich, from serving as a director of Chelsea’s board after being sanctioned by the British government. ayokinews.com reports
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UK sanctioned seven additional Russian oligarchs this week, including Chelsea Football Club owner, Roman Abramovich.
The European champions have been subjected to severe constraints as a result of Abramovich’s penalties.
Chelsea is unable to sign players, renew contracts, or sell match tickets due to spending constraints on away games.
Despite Abramovich’s protestations, the government has labeled him a member of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, prompting the Premier League to take action against him.
“Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a director of Chelsea Football Club,” a Premier League statement said on Saturday.
“The board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a license issued by the Government, which expires on May 31 2022.”
Abramovich had previously indicated his desire to sell Chelsea, with a slew of parties expressing interest in a team that has won 19 major trophies since the Russian billionaire took over the club in 2003.
Chelsea Sale On Hold Due To UK Sanctions On Roman Abramovich
The government is still open to a sale, but it would have to accept a new license with the caveat that no profit would go to the Russian, who has invested roughly £1.5 billion ($2 billion) into the club.
The effect of the sanction is already being felt by Chelsea as its Jersey sponsor, Three, suspended its £40 million agreement.
Despite the “difficult” circumstances, Chelsea’s official training gear partner Trivago announced on Friday that it will continue to support the team.
Chelsea’s credit cards were allegedly briefly stopped on Friday as the company and the authorities worked out the details of their special operating license.
On Sunday, Thomas Tuchel’s team will face Newcastle United in an attempt to maintain their Premier League third-place position.
