The World Poverty Clock (WPC), has named India as the country with the highest number of people living in severe poverty, surpassing Nigeria in latest ranking. ayokinews.com reports
This was made known in a recent update, released by the World Poverty Clock (WPC), considering the COVID-19 pandemic economic impact.
The World Poverty Clock is an online tool that tracks global and regional progress against poverty and offers real-time poverty data on countries.
According to the WPC data, people who live on less than N800 per day (less than $2 per day), are considered extremely poor.
Nigeria topped the list in 2018, with 87 million people living in severe poverty, compared to 73 million in India.

The newly released data, confirmed that about 83 million Indians were plunged into the extreme poverty line in 2022, accounting for 6% of the country’s 1.3 billion population.
WPC also confirmed that 70 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, a figure which accounts for 33% of the country’s population of over 200 million.
In 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), released a report detailing how over 80 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, surviving on $1 dollar per day.
