Nigerian Disc Jockey (DJ) and billionaire daughter, Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, stage named DJ Cuppy, has stated that she’s being undervalued and underpaid compared to her male colleagues in the entertainment (music) industry. ayokinews.com reports
In an interview shared on social media, Cuppy spoke about male privileges in the entertainment (music) industry.
According to the Disc Jockey, she works twice as hard than her male counterparts and gets half as much due to a system that doesn’t undervalues women.
“Going to the male-dominated space, you have to be strong and have the zeal. Women have to work twice as hard to get half as much done. Compared to my male counterparts, I’m still underpaid, undervalued,” DJ Cuppy said.
“And, according to them, I have to have a particular aesthetic which I fight to this day. My advice is to be at peace with yourself because men in that industry would tell you that you’re not good enough.”
“You have to come at peace with yourself and know that you’re enough. You will have a difficult time if you work just for validation. Do what you love, understand your environment, and build on your strengths.”
Cuppy, launched her music career in 2014 with the release of her mix titled, ‘House of Cuppy’. She described her kind of new sound as “Neo Afrobeat”.
In 2015, DJ Cuppy went on 8 tours across major African cities, in what she called ‘Cuppy Takes Africa’. Cuppy’s first tour later became an 8-episode documentary series on Fox Life Africa.
During the course of her tour, Cuppy visited Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Africa.
In August 2020, Cuppy went on to release her debut Album titled ‘Original Copy’.
