The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has rejected the federal government’s proposal to increase taxes on non-alcoholic and carbonated beverages in the country. ayokinews.com reports
The NLC’s position was articulated in a statement signed by Mr. Ayuba Wabba, the organization’s President, and distributed to journalists in Abuja.
According to the federal government, the increased taxation comes as a medium to discourage sugar overconsumption, prevent obesity, and raise finances for the 2022 budget.
The union, on the other hand, believes that raising taxes on non-alcoholic and carbonated beverages, which is one of the features of the 2021 Finance Act, will put citizens in even more hardship.
As a result, the NLC has asked the National Assembly to amend the Finance Act as soon as possible to remove the sections that restored excise duties on non-alcoholic and carbonated beverages.
