An Indian Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying the country’s Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, has crashed in the Southern region of Tamil Nadu, as reported by the airforce. ayokinews.com reports
Reporting the tragic incident, the Indian airforce tweeted, “An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.”
Aboard the crashed helicopter were 14 people which includes, CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and other family members.
The Indian authorities have launched an inquiry to ascertain the main cause of the incident.
“An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.”
Meanwhile, a rescue operation is underway as 3 people involved in the crash have been rescued from the site. Locals are also helping out in the rescue operation.
