Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has emerged the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) for the 2023 presidential election. ayokinews.com reports
Atiku received 371 votes in the election conducted on Saturday at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State came in second with 237 votes, followed by former Senate President Bukola Saraki with 70 delegate votes.
The Governors of Akwa Ibom and Bauchi, Udom Emmanuel and Bala Mohammed, received 38 and 20 votes, respectively.
Meanwhile, Anyim Pius Anyim, the former Secretary to the Federation’s Government, received 14 votes. Diana Oliver and Samuel Ohuabumwa, both received one vote, while the exercise resulted in the cancellation of 12 ballots.
In response to his triumph, Atiku pledged to strive for the country’s development if elected president.
He described his election as the presidential candidate of Nigeria’s opposition party as an honor.

“Today, the march to rebuild and unite our great country moves forward. I am honoured to be named the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. I look forward to speaking with Nigerians across the country, taking the message of hope and unity as we build one future for one people,” he said.
Atiku was the PDP’s presidential contender in the 2019 elections, which President Muhammadu Buhari won.
His opposing contender for the 2023 presidential election is not known as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to name its candidate.
